Mosque of Mineo
Mineo, Italy
2015
50 km away from the small town of Mineo, Sicily is its double, CARA Mineo, a refugee camp surrounded by barren wheat fields and autostrade. Nearly 300 North African refugees are located here, most of which are Muslim. Despite this, there is no place to pray. This project wishes to create a prayer hall on this site, but unlike the camp which will be destroyed once the refugee
crisis is deemed over and the memories of the detention centre erased, this mosque is designed to slowly degrade over time, with certain elements remaining on the site permanently. Escaping the state’s process of erasure, the Mineo Mosque will act as ascar, marking the presence of refugee life into the Italian landscape.
